I appreciate you up in here tonight a couple things I'd like to just be dressed just to give us a sense of where we are as we begin February start with 1/8 a reminder that we did record our last board meeting with will be recording all board meetings moving for so if you can't make it to the board meeting all you need to do is go to the website looking to do the board and you will see where to access the recording screen viewing at you know not only live but after the fact so we want to make sure that there's a I level up accessibility and transparency so it's not just a matter of being able to make it to the board meeting can also see the recording and I will say that remote learning snow day stand for a little bit of a culture shift here so I will say that we did have a snow day nurse want to make sure it's it's been noted and we did have a snow day in December 11th December 18th I did talk about the fact that we could leverage remote learning during inclement weather we did that last week we did that today some of the air on the side of safety but I still want to maintain a sense of continuity regarding the educational process we have a snow day moving forward, but I feel if we can and utilize the virtual platform cuz I said to maintain a sense of continuity consistency I'm going to look to try to do that we do have two additional call them additional we still have to emergency today also known as snow days in the calendar if we don't use those days those then get used over there already embedded within the calendar and nestled around certain times of the year specifically from this point we we you why is the Memorial Day weekend to stretch that out if those days are not used in terms of the I just talked about just a health climate for a moment you general is a resolution tonight for the board to support the recommendations of Governor Murphy that public school Personnel be considered priority as a relates to the Alex mission of the vaccine within the state and by that I mean kind of Shifting or or Public School Employees to that one a category or the next the next up in 1 B the letter that the Mercer County superintendents sent recently got some press which is probably a good thing but but ultimately want to make sure that we're trying to make a little noise to ensure that we're not forgotten he part of the things that we're asking is same to the health department but we want to partner with you especially as a relates to the logistics of dissemination you know school districts are still highly skilled and highly practiced moving people in and out in a weed we do large events all the time right we whether it's a graduation whether it's a play whether it's funny cuz then we know how to organize groups in areas in parking lots and get people so I've been looking at Kodak to make sure they don't don't bypass us at school districts as it relates to the process of distribution of the vaccinations I'm asking the board basketball season are cheerleaders are in full swing are basketball season they had the opening day I think I mentioned it at the last meeting on January 26th and their season schedule to conclude around March sticks swimming and track and field it what kind of next up so there please schedule today we're doing some virtual and practices and meetings and they were scheduled to begin the in-person opportunities on February first things happen you know we are going through some transition I do need to acknowledge Mike cepicky who is the assistant athletic director at the high school and also Dennis Benson the principal for kind of jumping in you know with with short notice to come to take on a heavy lift as a relates to transitioning art aspects associated with that I will say that there was a slight delay on the access to the pool and I know I've asked coach it to communicate that to our source swim team participants know was a combination of factors when we needed to get the health department I didn't know this fully the health department needed to come out in this is more so covid-19 it was some Provisions that they needed from us and we're in the process of actually showing that to them you know we lost some time last week because of the snow days but we're looking to get our students ended in the pool as quickly as possible the hoping that they were expecting that the health department will be out this week really just the kind of his conclude that process and give us the green light to move forward so parents sitting in our student-athletes connected to the swim team ask for your patience with we will get you in the pool and hopefully this week the optimistic regarding the pool I will give it a quick shout out to eating Rhode Island and B student participants the actors the witness and have no opportunity for us students once again to Showcase their talent and I just think that's that's why we're here so it's great to have opportunities and be creative and to overcome obstacles but still have students at Productions in you know not not give up based on some of the limitations that we have in person connection so I was really a throw with that I think that's it for now I'm going to conclude things and cancel inclement weather coming up later this week on Thursday on I don't think it's going to be a significant but we'll keep an eye on that one other thing I'll mention tonight lesbian they are still letting us the standardized assessment bad school districts in New Jersey completed historically has changed labels over over the years but you know it's usually a Sprint at current we received word that school district should still plan to administer this assessment Even in our current situation we also received communication not anything in detail regarding a remote option for this assessment to occur so that's all I haven't turned up with that is we don't have any kind of sense of what that me resemble it appears that the state of New Jersey did not receive a waiver federal government you bypass. assessment as they did last year that's what occurred last year but I don't know where things like I was scheduled to move forward with that despite the somewhat of a bumpy road. We've had this year so you know I'm going to look together more information and look the kind of lens some voice to this this argument but as of today we are scheduled to have it and I did I had a meeting with the Department of Education on Friday didn't get a lot of answers it was kind of just like what I just shared with you was really what was delivered to to US during that that me but we gather more information on the sound make sure we will keep the community updated but as of right now it appears that they'll be an in-person option but also remote option makes it to the njsla and with that I missed the president I concluded my report thanks Mark any questions for Mark on the board okay Ru 5 is the 1st of June board members coming so I'll open the floor to the board any comments from the board it's a sorry it's James I was looking for the mute button night I actually just wanted to say that the memorials for a mister Peter was so beautiful and I even attended the Mercer County Board of Commissioners meeting on January 28th and they had a moment of silence for him and it was it was it was just nice to see how he was remembered and how he's being honored I just wanted to say that extreme I'm just a little comment on the ocean report always great to hear from you guys positive during this thank you thank you okay I will move will have another opportunity. Daniels the Board of Education mr. ham and mr. Vincent for their continued support of our Arts education programs at Hightstown High School I would like to ask for the district to approve the Hightstown High School jazz band to practice in person under the district guidelines this would also be line with the surrounding Mercer County Schools such as Princeton West Windsor and Hopewell Valley if the district is not going to approve the in-person playing of instruments I respectfully request that we be informed of their reasons why so that they can be addressed in timely manner so that our students can start to play together in person thank you the next comment is from Leanne Clark she says good evening today I heard New Jersey has the lowest rate of transmission for covid-19 and the is this really promising news the governor has open restaurants to 35% capacity gyms are open everyone is shopping and then he sees as well as several New Jersey schools have children successfully attending 5 days a week in person I feel heard check needs to be more to get a solid plan in place and find a way to make it work to open the schools Foley for in-person learning the current hybrid schedule is not working nor enough I asked the district to take a deeper dive into the schedules and plans for your reopening before June all around we have had too many empty promises said September we all know the state government does not plan to open fully in the near future so matter should have already been taken by our Administration team to meet the reopening guidelines if some requirements are challenging I asked you to find a solution not just continue to postpone a full reopening involve the community ask for help find a way to make it work and open the school so students can return to the classroom five. My son is Town attends Hightstown High on a hybrid schedule and all his teachers are in person in the classroom for those teachers who have not yet returned because they are awaiting the vaccine the district if not already doing so should be at helping to assist them and getting them back to needed any person who had the underlying medical condition or whom as a smoker can sign up as of today Mercer County is pushing the governor to make teachers a priority and I hope our district is helping to support this request if it's a ventilation if you other than the overall average completed with the HVAC then crack a window the kids can dress appropriately for the weather if it's is facing problem then convert the gyms or cafeteria and as many other spaces in the building into a classroom it's disappointing we do not yet have a cell plan for reopening and it's already February I would like to know when we can expect all students return to school for for full in person instruction this all the first issue is for you to the budget discussion yes thank you just to give a quick update on where we are with the budget from the last time we met if you remember that we were well over 2 million dollars in a deficit trying to work. said to balance our budget since then we've come to an agreement which is I think a pretty historic agreement for us we we've always kind of struggled to finance like most districts due to finance our technology needs the really what we had put in our original budget with a two million-dollar purchase one time purchase to kind of catch us up cuz we are kind of hitting a bubble with laptops and teacher tablets and Chromebooks coming off the line so what we have worked out is basically a two million-dollar lease purchase looks like any lease where you take a loan out and you pay it off several years for the equipment so we have a two million. car lease purchase which will be about $500,000 in principal and interest over the next 4 years this is important because now basically what we've done is be operationalize our technology needs to moving forward as he's come off will have a plan to replace I'm sure that's something that we haven't had in the past I think that's something that we're all very proud that we finally hit so when we do that we get to reduce that 2 + million dollar deficit Me by about 1.5 million dollars an hour down to around three or four hundred thousand which you know for district are size are we should be able to reconcile that so we're just kind of sitting right there at the moment you know some important dates coming up right now we're waiting for the Governor's budget address which is usually towards the end of February it has moved in years past where they've had trouble balancing their budget it takes an in-law enactment to move the address that has come in late March before and after early March before that may happen as they try to come up with a balanced budget everyone's asking what's happening with state aid as you know we have balanced Flat state aid we are expecting DS2 which is the shifting of money from the overfunded districts to the underfunded districts like us to still occur we're expecting a million dollars is far as that goes so everyone is sitting Pat waiting the governor's address keep in mind this is an election year so in election years or you know schools tend to make out because the governor does not want to go until next New York State make a funding schools so we're relying on add to hopefully maybe shake a few dollars less I'm not sure how he's going to do that they're still billions behind they're still borrowing to balance the regular budget so at that's not a good thing so we'll see how this all plays out next couple weeks next important date will be March 22nd that will be the meeting I believe that we are going to have our initial tentative adoption the budget size for Mark and I do the budget presentation to you guys and you know we have died huge resolution where you know you guys are basically approve the budget to be sent down to the county so they can review the state document all the supporting documentation for our later public
