Jolie yes yes yes so are you going to cost for the executive session begin thank you welcome back apologies for the longer meeting Dan and take three separate fence report eating everyone do you update for today I would say I'll start by saying that it feels good to meet in person tonight it's been over about a year-and-a-half since our last in person meeting so hopefully this is a sign of things to come couple of updates for the summer first thing I just want to talk a little bit about some some of learning that's happened since the conclusion of our school year so we have two different summer programs exist for our students we have our summer bridge program system extension learning general education population we have about three hundred and forty students participating in grades pre-k through 12 for extended school year population that's our students who have IEPs our students with disabilities we have our extended school year program which house has about 200 students in grades Pre-K to 11 so I need to commend our teachers are working those programs kind of extended their we are in our administrative team to organize dinner providing support to them currently we actually started our programs pretty soon your end of the week. Rolling literally a week or so after the conclusion of the school year as it relates to our our Educators we've got a robust summer professional development series of offerings for them I want to thank our curriculum Department that by Sandy small what's the range of a professional learning that we're offering our teachers of weather is precum updates introducing into some new core resources strategies to deliver content. Co-teaching in a big emphasis from on what we need to be mindful of as a relates to welcoming our students back to school in person and in the fall some students who have not been in school for a year and a half in person so there's a lot there to be off for learning continuous and I appreciate the work of supervisors and administrators birth the Sorting of the majority of those workshops our administrative team just completed two days of our by a Kohler part one of our administrators Retreat that was on Thursday and Friday of last week are we on 4 days of that total the summer we have our two two additional dates are part 2 is it where will be on July 29th and 30th time for the past of those 2 days really one reflection of the prior year I was he there was a lot to learn as much as we wanted to escape the year we think there's some some important lessons learned that we can carry forward and we talked about some goal setting so we were reflecting on goals from the school year but we also use that as an opportunity to identify some goal areas for the upcoming year will continue that work in short order and I'll be asking the board of the some input and also you're wasting which will shape and refined love to be in a position we look to solidify our goals for this year and one of our August meetings so they'll be more to come on that we also refused some curriculum updates time to engage in inter-rater reliability and calibrating of our evaluation process to ensure that of a team about 30 to 35 we have a sense of how cohesion regarding what we're looking for and how we're supporting staff and provide be back with a strong emphasis on providing meaningful written feedback we used to strong evaluation model here in our school district so we did have two representatives from strong who came into the store at 8 work surrounding the interrater reliability does a requirement that we I'm going to say almost it tested on that annually to ensure there is a sense of commonality in terms of the lenders by which we we we do you instruction and provide fee could you said two days was action-packed will continue that process as we move forward in the fall right so June 28th New New Jersey Department of Education released the road forward document which replaces the road back document that was released last July listen to short a document I call it a Mike Roberge the rollback and it provides things for school district to consider as we transition to The Fault couple of non-negotiables. You know outside of the consideration there's an expectation that they'll be a full-time full day in person destruction within schools the road forward talks obviously about some of the health and safety guidelines that need to be in place in order for that to occur it also addresses issues connected to some learning acceleration that District need to be prepared for on the heels of the road forward Guidance the CDC provided some updated guidance it wasn't the one night as it relates to the health and safety recommendations a couple of things one we all agree that students returning to school is what we we know what's best both for their academic growth as well as social emotional learning is an expectation the vaccination obviously serve as the most significant prevention strategy to deal with the pandemic both pieces of guidance reference masks know that the Hot Topic where we are currently the guidance has indicated that individuals will vaccinated or mask option we have not solidified that yet the guidance also talks about folks who were two years old or older and who are not vaccinated should be wearing masks and the folks who ran crowd should be wearing masks just received this guidance we have not made a determination and exactly where we are in fall obviously folks who are vaccinated that's something that clearly we believe there should be some flexibility but I just need some weed some time just to kind of process the information that we received I have a meeting scheduled with the health department next week just to get some insight what I say is no the masking indoors dynamic it it's a little early to to make a proclamation regarding exactly how that will look but I definitely will provide an update to the community in short order a consideration regarding looking to ensure some distancing where feasible 3 feet is the recommendation where possible however if brie feet cannot be maintained that is is not an excuse for us to not move forward that's kind of the guidance of just looking at different mitigation strategies whether that's having students facing in the same direction but that should not prevent us from reopening in person CC screening ventilation hand-washing respiratory etiquette staying home will you speak those things will prevail in the fall we'll still have screening mechanisms in place to ensure that we want to help these folks here and if you're not feeling well we need to stay home the provisions related to potential screening and a possible explosion will also maintain if someone has covid symptoms in in the fall I will save that you know we've been in and out to say this mean the year that we've just experienced I think you know who was in the deep end a lot of ways and we had a crash course in number these initiatives looking at the considerations have been recommended I don't feel as though there is anything there that we can't handle and you know there's the road for Word document outside of CDC recommend provide us with religious guidance and the only mandate thus far in there like I said it's the strong recommendation regarding masking for unvaccinated individuals the one provision which is an order of the of the sea she is on buses both drivers and passengers whether vaccinated or not need to wear a mask on buses so that's the only thing that I can tell you at this point cemented now that can change a right now. that's the one piece of the guidance that is governed by a c d c order will continue our communication obviously with the health department we are watching the transmission within the community also the region you know the covid-19 vinilo I mean actually technically it's moderate but the numbers have declined significantly before a region it is at a moderate level and I you know if we if we would have fast forward where we are today I feel so good about where we were going for the fall and I look forward to having our students returning person obviously was going to still have to maintain some mitigation strategies and prevention measures but I definitely look forward to resume what we believe schools should reflect and that would be students in the hallways and classrooms quick update regarding some summer construction of a number of projects that are in motion right now the bicycle we have our new tennis court installation slight delay on that project were awaiting some poles for some fencing we've actually started the project looks like we're going to be slightly delayed by a couple of weeks but I think we should still be in good shape with the conclusion of the summer and transitioning to the ball at the Terry O'Driscoll were in the process of engaging in a somewhat of a makeover changing the exterior kind of putting a brick facing an exciting and so forth on there which I think is much-needed we're also looking at replacing some of the HV AC equipment at that school location but I middle school or engaged in a window replacement pretty much we started this window replacement project this will conclude it pretty big school so we have quite a few Windows to replace couple years ago we also started it and internal renovation project in the hallways and classrooms the Middle School really that entail just kind of a somewhat of a mini face-lift as it were some new lighting some LED lighting of which really really made a tremendous difference it just going to replace him some of the casings inside the classrooms and we'll just kind of bring them up-to-date this will be the third phase of that initial and I have to commend our maintenance department because that work actually is handled by a meeting its staff here within the district we do not a contract that out and we kind of got a nice little blueprint that we started at the middle school and now we actually extended it to Grace and Rogers school as well so we started that the past school year with me selecting the hallway we did some upgrades to the hallway in classrooms with continued in that process this summer which will include the bathroom I know our schools are so therefore we need to make sure we reallocate resources to ensure their welcoming environment for students based on covid-19 be completely honest the kind of lifted the veil as it were regarding some of the HV AC related needs food equipment standpoint and efficiency standpoint that we need within our buildings believe that will conclude my report tonight Mister president text Pete episode I mean the side of my back then is the first opportunity for board member comments before will have to moderate this week at one person at a time speaking many board members I think you can let start with Nicole as she is right at the corner of my eye last year the opening act and mandates are whatever figure it out and sort it out with guidance do you think it would be possible to me to bring up to the house at 1 to give families and idea of you know whatever we decide on like 10 minutes I know that you know they put the information on the website and everything and that's all well and good but if they can maybe just get 10 minutes just talked to Dallas before school starts just to they have their lines at the distress and how you did that you know it was busy part of the issue was to some of the issues the Spike Lee political so what I've been mindful of his wanting to fight and protect the health department so we meet with them routinely and so much of the guidance is delivered via the New Jersey Department of Health that kind of trickles down to the local Health Department be here I'm scheduled to meet with them next week dumb in regarding numbers weakness communicated every week you know in terms of like this the status within the within the within the local region so will definitely open up an invitation to them and hopefully they look at themselves all right yeah I will definitely extend the invitation they've been a great partner I have to I have to really acknowledge the support that the health department has provided really sound guy in so long and they always say to me you know they aren't they are just providing the guidance they don't make the decisions you know okay so my questions about summer learning I was wondering why are the 6th and 8th graders or through a the only ones that are offered Advanced programs why does the dance programs not off at the other grades we but we had a in terms of advanced program you need to bask what's worth I see there's advanced it was advanced math there's advanced this is the best math program Advanced Ela program Advanced science program but I don't do that for Heather a great I'm sorry for the summer bridge program outside of the TNT approach the middle school where we begin to kind of move students towards more noticeable advancement as a really good students transitioning the sixth grade and then beyond that we want to offer them some kind of ramp-up coursework in under the learning acceleration umbrella to ensure that they are prepared you know based on the year that we just experienced and be identified that she group as it as an image at least that would benefit from that students at the high school level yes we are dealing Credit Recovery because that's a different type of structure where you need to have your credit in order to move forward to the next grade level often times and sometimes you're dealing with a course that you were not successful in turn the pathway at the high school new students are kind of dealing with prerequisite as a release to be ineligible for an advanced placement so we think the middle school is a place or an environment where students or a write off that we want to make sure to we created an opportunity for them to get a sense of what they were going to be walking into before engaging in it so no that's not where we are at horizon or resources we both of the Middle School population will benefit the most okay and then one more thing on the superintendent report that you sent us mention I guess there's an issue with the stamped it was a well I'm just wasn't an issue of source but that we've had prior work meetings where parents expressed concern regarding book and it was presented show me the East Windsor cares commentary regarding the book and I was just sharing with the board that information regarding the the controversial nature of the book books dealing with race in the United States there was some concern regarding one of the timing of the book you know in terms of us being in Virtual learning environment it was a concern regarding one of our the birth of absence teachers who we hire let me hear who received the Baton at work from the teacher going to leave and there was some concern regarding some of her approaches to delivering the song that was my my reason for sure and just to make sure that you were in the in the loop in terms of what you may have heard will just find some clarity regarding what the issue was but I did have a meeting with two families regarding the book and that was the extent thank you explaining that up I asked some of these materials be available to use the board to look at they are coming in up in discussions with the public and they are attracting a lot of attention nationally it's good for the board to be educated and to have some purpose $10 content sounds like I have copies I can actually give them to the folks who were here tonight when your way out so I have the the book stamps that the students in the 12th grade honors class and have a companion novel I couldn't really put no companion text students did not read that the teachers are cook or group of teachers engaged in Reading to determine if it would be inappropriate text so it's almost like the student version then you got the adult version at both so pics and just a side step for that whisper all of the grades if we can just have easy access to seeing what they are and we could even take books out of the library at our Leisure and familiarize ourselves with what the students are reading at all the grade levels board member you have access to anything you need I mean our our our our book selections of book titles or they're accessible to all not at all looking to be less than transparent that should say bless you recommendation we should look at all of those just getting them from you but just take take some time and I'm over so at least we're aware the blasting red what we deem to be controversial topics I think it was going to have a book selection or book selections I think we'll have our curriculum Department Provide support presentation Regarding why we're going in that direction we think the educational benefits are of that just as I'd like to think that now what we're putting information in front of students were not looking to indoctrinate students were looking to no provide that level of education and then oftentimes we want students to question we want students to delve deeper themselves but guess what we think there's something that may have a sense of discomfort they will be helpful for us to be corrective and transparent about what that is any of the board members okay is the first opportunity and time for be here this afternoon 4 p.m. are we going to have any written comments Oakshire or not baseball I am Karen Salter 24 Sussex Lane in East Windsor Mister Daniels I already had some communication this through email on this topic but I just wanted to point out to the board members because I didn't email you that all year long parents and students were being told that decisions were being made on guidelines that were being put forth from the governor and the CDC and now the new guidelines came out that masks are not mandated for anybody who's and as you can see there are a lot of us here tonight that don't have our masks on so I think this is now and mr. Daniels just stated that he needs time to process that and solidify that new guy light but I'm here is the parent saying that's a total contradiction that what has happened all year long where the guidelines rules are decision-making I have a senior that has to be here on Wednesday for a college boots he's also plays a fall Sport and they're in the weight room masks on I just want to know when our students who are on the East Windsor Regional School District campus will be allowed and Grandad seem right that all of us are here tonight not to wear masks if they are vaccinated thank you we have talked by the way I think if I would have known that was you I would have said it was early tonight. I appreciate your feedback State tonight so couple of different things and I'm not you know the governor made a statement last month about masks being optional in the fall but what he quietly shared was that he was awaiting some CDC guidance to determine what that actually look like a people here that right so you know if folks are going to be back Sunday today direction we're moving it where we are right now is I share with you is that the activities that were planned right after the conclusion of the school year we're really looking at them as being extension activities because when we when we when we transition we did not have the guidance and as much as the governor to make that Proclamation he's talkin about the start of the new school year which is in September and he made the statement as in any direction so yes the roads or word was released on June 28th but it's referring to upcoming school year so what I shared with you is that you know right now we we don't have you know couple different things to clarify we have follow the guidelines we have our interpretation on the guidelines students right now Outdoors are not required to wear masks something that was greenlit last year was the latter part where we had a relaxed approach to outdoor expectations you're referring to the weight room which is an indoor structure we have students gathered together we are have extended The Mask requirement couple things that we need to deal with one I guess tonight is a very small number of us in a very large space guy you know we're operating under the expectation that folks have indicated they vaccinated will trust that when we're dealing with our students we have to determine the process in place that we're going to have to identify students who are vaccinated versus not the end you know I think that we want to do this in a way that's meaningful I don't want to do this in a way that's haphazard and that's what transitioning right now our energy is clearly placed on how we're preparing ourselves for what I said to you I ask for your patience as we can lesbian cuz the last thing you want me to do is put forth with a set of guidelines that we're going to be drastically changing as we move forward I am thrilled that wouldn't be back and we recognize that for individuals were vaccinated masks will be optional okay we just have not officially stated that for us to population indoors yet we're moving in that direction I just need you to trust them I don't I don't want us to be masked if we don't have to be we need to make sure we have a process in and I'll be honest with you the challenge that we're going to face right now is how do we address our you know Pre K to 12 year-old population that are not eligible for the back as we move forward and that's what I need some time for us to work through and also need some time for a 12 and older population to ensure that we have a process in place so we can comfortably identify and understand who's vaccinated first now so I'm just saying that you know this information is just arrived obviously the health condition of our of our community I think is in good shape as we look ahead to the fall I'm very optimistic about where but that loves you know just answer to your request for the weight room specifically right now I would just ask you just to hold off until we we get it since we're here because we were operating from a student standpoint Under the Umbrella of indoors comes along with a cover but I will provide an update in short order to the community regarding Where We Are anyone else in the room machine to speak at this opportunity okay we did have one hand raised in the attendees yes or celebrity we do have Polo Kanye who's raised her hand yes we hear you Apollo counter 24 Wendover Road I just want to address the comments that were made by the board regarding the book stamped I'm going to state that I am not raising an issue with the book but I am raising an issue with how it was my son was in the class and I will stay that mr. Daniels and Miss Griffin spoke with me and alleviated some of my concerns, and I agree that students in 12th grade honors class 3 box of contacts topic but they should have open and honest conversations about them and I rely on my children's teachers to present these in a safe manner that promote civil discussion with us to the intubate discuss and make up their own minds this was not what was done in that class which is what was all of the issues regarding stamps also I want to add that my six. it was presented with Ela material that included Beyond logos and questions such as do you agree with statements such as sometimes death is necessary so my comment that if the district wants to include these books in the curriculum and they also need to make sure that the teachers are presenting the information objectively and not presenting them as facts I really cannot overstate help inappropriate but comments that were made by The Substitute Teacher in my son's class thank you thank you mrs. call Ian when we spoke we had a good conversation you know I said him in reflecting on the past we are a couple different factors one you know when we're selecting material that may have a sensitive nature I think that key factors as ensuring that our teachers have a rapport and relationship with the students before them believe that they leave of absence teacher did not have the benefits do that so you know what else I reflect on that we questioned whether that may have been the right approach to have long-term substitute take on that role you know based on some of the concerns you expressed and we addressed with the individual you're right I think the teacher didn't handle things in in in the best way I think she tried to handle it in the way that she thought was Best But ultimately not having the advantage of being on our district for a longer. Of time it appears that she probably needed some additional dinosaur support that is something that we were conscientious up and that's what the departmental teachers at the benefit of leading up to introducing the particular text this person didn't get the same level will have more of a micro version of that training so your point I'll take and I think that we're very conscientious to make sure that depending on the developmental age of a student presenting information in an objective we do want to promote thinking critically thinking question asking and depending on the maturity level of student debate and no as as adults in our school district as Educators that we do have an obligation to facilitate that no way it is not being portrayed or perceived as us looking to influence students with her own personal beliefs and and I'll leave it at that and I appreciate your feedback I have the opportunity to be hard to communicate and you have to see what we want to avoid that moving forward and I could I could sit here and say hey we had a substitute that was the problem but but but that was a famous substitute I think it was a set of circumstances you know in hindsight you know in a in a in a year we had virtual learning and hybrid Learning Community classroom Community with a little difficult to establish of times I'd say that as I reflect on that this something you could have done differently in that learning will take for it love you thank you for your feedback Mark that is the only person that can race over another opportunity in a few minutes early to do at night so I don't think we had an old business to deal with under item 5 so we'll move to item 6 to buy off of 2nd Reed bylaw 016 4.6 remote public board meetings during a declared emergency thank you is there any discussion okay call mr. 10-month employees so the summer learning is optional obviously we do put in front of them things that we think are necessary and things it will be beneficial for the upcoming school year we are this year having some summer learning items as essential and if our teachers do not have the opportunity for various reasons to participate during the summer we are going off for a condensed version of Summer workshops during the first two staff days potentially subsequent to that in the school year but I definitely will provide the board with an update regarding our percentages of participation if we know the people at Sandy just shitted they were 25 teachers in it in a math Workshop today but will get you more comprehensive than but we definitely believe the teachers are you know looking 222 going to get themselves prepare for the upcoming school year so we know this isn't his interests there sometimes people aren't always as available just based on family off pieces of work responsibilities during the summer but we definitely have a robust offering activities for the teachers but I'll get you some data regarding participation thank you the PD are we offering remote options for that now too so the teachers don't have to come to school or tell him first I'm merely offering in person we offer maybe to help out our families again to have an addition vaccination clinic at the high school or so in terms of the partnership with the health department we're going to continue to offer multiple vaccination clinics we tentatively have one scheduled your I was looking to just solidify that looking to have a Pfizer Clinic here for 12 and up on August 3rd I think for the first one then August 24th for the second one that will be formally communicated pretty soon but those are two that I know of right now that's via the West Windsor / Heights townhome apartment just had a communication with the East Windsor Health Department who also looking to plan something utilizing school for so I believe they're going to have a series of opportunities for vaccinations to a car both during the summer but also during the school year thank you that's great if we could just you know as soon as possible Karachi I just had that conversation when I meet I like the method but I do those two dates that just came to me I'm going to say Friday so I know that those two of them were looking to go have some conversation to make for the dark gym was available thank you any other board members okay B is the second opportunity for public comments anyone in the room with in the district for 14 years and was not given an opportunity for professional development he was just told to sink or swim in his current position and not given an accommodation of what his doctor had requested to move into a position. he held successfully for 11 years of the 14 so I'm extremely disappointed because leadership begins if it's hot and I don't know I'm really concerned about what's going on in our community with the hiring and firing and all of what is going on with in this District so I just wanted to speak and hopefully have my voice heard thank you please can you say who that was because we didn't hear it in the beginning Cindy hendy I just think a brief comment I'll see that the Personnel are not permitted to discuss publicly I do appreciate you coming you're confirm that you can hear me all I did notice start hearing some feedback I did notice on the heist the Tybee missed a field trip locations one of the locations listed was for the the b a p s Tryon facility in Robbinsville we've had some recent local news regarding human trafficking in the lawsuit being filed by the federal by a federal agency regarding that's on the show that's what the
