About Us

The Walter C. Black Elementary School, located on a nine-acre site on Stockton Street in Hightstown, is named in honor of a former lifelong resident of our community who served on the local school board for 54 years. The original building was first occupied in 1950 with additions added in 1953, 1958, 1970, 2000, and 2004. We are proud of our school mascot, “Dale the Dolphin” who appears regularly at school functions. We have a very active Parent-Teacher Organization and we truly appreciate all of the ways that they support our school. Our school has a strong sense of community, as teachers work together with administration, parents, and students to create a positive learning environment.

Approximately 500 students in grades K through 2 attend our school. Students participate in a balanced literacy approach which integrates reading and writing and provides a comprehensive program. Children’s literature is the focus of shared and guided reading lessons. Students develop knowledge of phonics and spelling through Fundations and the Journeys Word Study programs. Most importantly, students are encouraged to participate in independent reading and writing throughout the day to build their passion for knowledge and interests.

Teachers work with the students in areas of problem-solving during math instruction. Lessons involve students in a variety of activities that include hands-on materials and technology while stressing higher levels of abstract thinking. Science involves students in real life activities through an inquiry and discovery approach that introduces them to physical, earth, and life science.
Our fine arts program includes art, music, physical education/health, stem, and computers. Our library has an extensive collection where students can borrow books regularly. The school has a full-time counselor who provides class, small group, and individual assistance. Conflict resolution is emphasized by the counselor and is a method that is reinforced by classroom teachers.

Responsible behavior and citizenship are stressed through our PRIDE Leaders Program: Be Prepared, Be Respectful, Be Inclusive, Be Determined, and Be Engaged. Each trimester, we have a PRIDE Leaders Luncheon to recognize students who display our core values. Additionally, students can be caught displaying a core value and receive a special sticker or receive a Praise From the Principal. These values are integrated into our curriculum, anti-bullying efforts, and school culture.

My name is Heather Gladkowski and I am the proud principal of the Walter C. Black School.  Prior to becoming a Principal in East Windsor, I worked in the Howell Township Public Schools where I was an Assistant Principal, Gifted and Talented Supervisor, and Teacher for many years.

I received my undergraduate degree from Northeastern University in Boston where I studied English Literature.  After graduating from college, I worked in public relations before deciding to return to Georgian Court University to earn my graduate degree in teaching and administration.

The Walter C. Black School is a wonderful place for students to learn and grow. Our P.R.I.D.E values (Prepared, Respectful, Inclusive, Determined and Engaged) are a focus throughout the year. Our teachers are dedicated to setting up a nurturing, student-centered environment.  Students participate in various learning opportunities and have access to technology tools that enhance their learning experiences. We have a very active PTO that supports our school in many ways.
